Why not?

Sun Feb 27, 2005, 9:29 PM
Hmm, I think I'm going to start doing what I use to do and that is take photos. I'm not a professional photographer but I think I can take some pretty good photos. So yeah, expect only photos from now on until I can actually draw or create something actually worth looking at. Peace.

Don't worry about if you're being true, if you're true it'll happen naturally.

The best advice you'll get is to begin simple. Graff is heavily founded in letterform and structure, so ledgibility is (surprising to some) very important. Even crazy wildstyles are ledgible. You'll wanna start with really basic, font-like letters like the grey ones here [link] What you'll wanna concentrate on is even proportion, straightness and consitency. Think of letters as broken down into parts, like drawing the human body. When you draw a person, you learn anatomy, study bone structure and muscle, etc. The same goes for letters. Each has different parts that work together in different ways. And like drawing people, first you gotta learn to draw people real. With letters, you start with the most basic, to really nail down the structure in your brain. Once you get better at drawing people, you begin to stylize, right? It still looks believeable, but not photorealistic. Same with letters. You'll start to change widths, stretch and bend parts to stylize it. But remember: letters have a way they "read." A triangle can be read as an A, a cross as a T, a circle as an O, a hook as a J, etc. As you learn your parts, keep in mind what makes that letter "read" as that letter. So when you begin to stylize your letters, that "read" stays intact. For example: the J here [link] retains it's hook shape. Even though it's twisted and bent some, and some parts have thicker widths than others, it keeps it's "read." Also note how the structure feels "solid." As though it could still exist. Just like the stylized drawing of a person.

Graffiti takes a lot of time and practice to learn and you never really stop learning. It's an ever going process. So have patience, and of course, have fun with it. I hope this helps some and good luck :).
